AMN has the contracts no one else has. Twice in my travel career I’ve needed specific locations (rural Montana, specific island in Hawaii) and AMN was the only agency that could deliver. For those scenarios, they’re invaluable. For standard markets, I always go back to smaller agencies where the pay is meaningfully higher.
The AMN Passport app is genuinely the best credential management tool in the industry. The contract experience was solid, recruiter was decent. Pay was lower than what my classmate was getting with ProTherapy for a similar assignment. If pay isn’t your #1 priority, AMN is reliable.
My biggest frustration with AMN is the total lack of pay transparency. They will not tell you what the bill rate is. When I found out through a facility contact what they were billing vs. what I was taking home, I was disappointed. The take-home was significantly lower than the math suggested it should be. Switching agencies next contract.
AMN was my first agency and I didn’t know better. Looking back, I left at least $200/week on the table compared to what I could have made with a transparent boutique agency. That said, the process was smooth, benefits were good, and I got placed quickly. If you’re new and just need to start traveling, AMN is a safe first step.
I use AMN specifically for locations where they’re the only game in town. For everywhere else, I use ProTherapy. Multi-agency strategy at its finest. AMN gets credit for having contracts in truly remote markets that no boutique agency can access.
Three contracts with AMN. Each one was professionally managed but not inspiring. Recruiters changed twice during my relationship with them. Pay was always a bit lower than competing quotes I’d get. The Passport app saved me hours of paperwork. Solid mega-agency experience — not a boutique experience.
AMN is best used as a secondary agency for locations smaller agencies can't fill. For standard markets, therapists consistently earn more with transparent boutique agencies.
